I don't think that I am missing the point at all. Being on FN makes their
books more marketable, and FN wants a share. I think it sucks but you
have
to admit that they will still sell more books than they would have
without
the fame they got form being on TV.
In a somewhat similar vein, my ex owned a small manufacturing
company with a man who'd invented this product. Even though
he came up with it on his own time, they had to pay royalties to the
guy's former employer for X number of years because it was in his
contract: anything he invented during the time he was under contract
belonged to the company.
My point is that I don't think it's particularly unusual to have a
company 'own' you to a certain extent. Certainly the movie industry
was like that for years.
