I was a programmer, and wanted to be a systems analyst. Well, they just
made us analyst/programmers. Same work, different title.

where i worked (arlington county, va), they wanted all the analysts to
have degrees in the subject. that sort of let out musicians and
liberal arts people who just kind of fell into making an honest
living.

my title was programmer/analyst too, but i always referred to myself
as a programmer. no sense puttin' on the dog.
