Since there's no agreement on whether obesity increases

know for sure whether bariatric surgery reduces or increases
overall mortality.

Just my two cents.

Why not read up on it before you make a guess?

Obesity can contribute to mortality in some diseases and mediate it in
others.

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/11/071106164810.htm
"The association between weight and causes of death can vary
considerably, with obesity associated with a significantly increased
mortality from cardiovascular disease (CVD), underweight associated
with increased mortality from primarily non-cancer, non-CVD causes,
and overweight associated with increased mortality from diabetes and
kidney disease combined, but with reduced mortality from other
non-cancer non-CVD causes of death, according to a new study."

There is more detail at the site.

Insofar as the surgery and concomitant weight loss increasing
mortality long term, there are several studies that indicate it does,
one from Pennsylvania only, that says there is a greater than
expected rate of suicide and deaths from CHD than in the general
population, and several that conclude more research is necessary.
None that I can find say it does not.
