Our provincial government wants to ban incandescent light bulbs and wants
everyone to use more efficient fluorescent bulbs. The feel that
incandescent bulbs lose efficiency because they produce heat. In this
climate we have our furnaces on for 6 months a year. It doesn't seem that
much of a waste to have light and a bit of heat when you are paying to heat
the place anyway.
In my house in the winter, we can almost completely heat the family
room and kitchen just with body heat from two people, two dogs, and
the lights. Put your hand up near a lightbulb - it's hot. It helps to
heat the room.
There have been recent news reports indicating that when you use
compact fluorescent bulbs in light fixtures that are turned on only
briefly, the bulbs can burn out after only about a year. I have
experienced "early death" of CFs, so I can believe this. Since 90% of
the lights in my house are only turned on for short bursts (bathrooms,
bedrooms, hall, etc), I'd prefer to just leave them with
incandescents.
Another problem I have with this whole CF issue is asthetics. I have a
very valuable antique crystal chandelier in my dining room. It
horrifies me to think of what it would look like with CF bulbs instead
of the normal little chandelier bulbs.
I do use CF bulbs in situations where they are appropriate.
