Anyone who buys preground mystery meat deserves to get sick.

I know you keep saying this, Sheldon, and have for years. Perhaps a
lot
of
people don't know they can select a cut or cuts of meat and ask the
butcher
at the stupidmarket to grind it for them. That's what I do. Doesn't
cost
me a penny extra. I simply don't have storage space for a grinder. If
the
butcher can do it for me right there in the store, why would I buy one?

E. coli fears trigger large recall of ground beef

By MarketWatch
Last Update: 2:33 AM ET Sep 30, 2007
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) - Topps Meat Co. said Saturday it expanded a
recall announced last week to include 21.7 million pounds of ground
beef that may be contaminated with a potentially fatal strain of E.
coli bacteria.
The meat products involved carry a variety of Topps's brand names --
including Butcher's Best and Sand Castle Fine Meat -- and have "best
if used by" dates between Sept. 25, 2007, and Sept. 25, 2008.
(snippage)

Whoa, that's quite a wide range of "used by" dates. Are they talking
about
frozen ground beef? I've never heard of this brand. Must be a
regional
thing...

Probably stocked in a frozen section you don't look at often. Neither do
I.

Eeew, frozen patties. No thanks. I can see the attraction if you've
got a lot of people to feed, I suppose...

Little known fact (Disclaimer: in some cities and stores, but not all cities
and stores): You can sometimes negotiate prices at supermarket meat
departments. If you've got a lot of people to feed, you may not need to
resort to the weird Topps-type frozen stuff.

Example: Earlier this summer, I wanted 10 thick bone-in pork chops for a
BBQ. The store (Wegman's) already had discounted "club packs" of various
cuts of chicken, steaks, boneless pork chops, etc., but not for bone-in pork
chops. I just asked, and they charged me $1.50 less per pound for the larger
quantity. I don't know if the guy was the department manager or not, but he
didn't have to go consult anyone. He just said "Yeah, sure. How many?"
