LOL. Poorly worded. I meant to say "who were not the result of genetics
(i.e., twins don't run in my family)." My point was that not all fraternal
twins run in families. When each of my twins grows up and tells people that
she's a twin and that she has two sets of twin cousins, people will
naturally assume that twins run in her family--which isn't the case.

It's a medical fact that any woman's chance of conceiving twins -
whether geneticly inherited or not - is increased from 1 in 700 to
about 1 in 70 between the ages of 29 and 32.
Which kind of makes sense. Way back in our great grandparents times
women were conceiving almost up to menopause, having larger families
and there were nearly always 1 or 2 sets of twins, some of which
survived, while some did not.
Fraternal twins are always carried along through the female line, not
through the male.
There appears to be an upsurge in multiple births nowadays, probably
because women are putting off having children until their late 20s,
which also fits in with the stats above.
When I was carrying our two we did quite a lot of research into twins
- which were on both sides of the family - but doctors then advised it
was all down to my lineage and not my husbands... hehehe to which he
was greatly relieved.

Many, many congratulations Terry and your family!!

Things I came to realise about multiple birth families... once I'd
come down off cloud nine....
ALWAYS keep to a strict routine - it's vital
Accept that you're not supermum and gratefully accept help &
assistance when offered & if it's not forthcoming...ask for help!!
Always use their names & encourage others to as well - never lump them
together as a single unit (ie: "The Twins" Twinnies etc)
Grab rest when and where you can - my husband was a treasure in the
early months, staying up till after midnight to do the middle of the
night feeding, while I slept, then I'd do the next feed early morning,
letting him sleep. Despite it all I usually managed a good 5-6 hours a
night and the odd hour during the day.
Take heaps and heaps of photos, videos...
Buy every children's birthday cake ever printed - you need inspiration
right from the start (we used to have multiple cakes each year in an
effort to make their shared day special: one for playgroup, one each
for kindy (then preschool & school) one each for their birthday party
and if their party wasn't on their actual birthday, another cake for
the big day!!!
Our sanity saver was having my doting parents (first grandchildren on
either side) close by. From when Jess & Angus were 1 month old they
had a weekend sleepover once a month - Friday night through to Sunday
afternoon - which allowed us to be a couple for a fews hours and
maintain our relationship, as well as being able to catch up on much
needed sleep! This went on until they were 12 months old then became
one-night sleepovers every 8-10 weeks or so. Consequently both
children have a very strong bond with my parents. (the other granny &
her defacto were strictly "hands off" until they could walk, talk,
feed themselves and hold a moderately intelligent conversation (around
11 yrs lol)
