Query:
If you order out for a pizza, what toppings do you request?
They are more limited than if you make it yourself.
I generally get sausage, mushroom, black olive and extra cheese.
At home, all bets are off!
See the above and add the following possibilities:
Ham
Pineapple
Artichoke hearts
Cocktail shrimp
Alternate extra cheeses (Monterey jack for me!)
Sliced smoked sausage (Pepperoni is too salty for me but YMMV)
Olives of any kind
Interesting items from the 'frige (Musgovian pizza)
Other ideas?
In the old days, before I discovered pineapple on pizza
I usually got sausage and green pepper. However only
from certain places that have good sausage and not those
pre-formed "rabbit" pellets that many places use these
days. There is one place near where I live that uses
fresh sweet or hot Italian sausage that they put on in
large irregular globs! It's to die for.
Now my favorite is pineapple and bacon. I first had that
about 25 years ago in 29 Palms, Calif., a small town in the
desert right outside of Joshua Tree National Monument
(or has it become a National Park these days?). There's
an Air Force (or something) base near there and they get
a lot of business from the base, which probably accounts for
the more exotic toppings being available. Anyway, that is
an awesome combo. Here in Pittsburgh a lot of places have
what they call "Hawaiian" pizza but it's pineapple and ham.
If they also have bacon on the toppings menu I ask them to
switch out the ham for bacon. So much better.
Even more recently there has been a rash of bbq pork or
chicken pizza, so I often get bbq pork if it's available.
If pork is not available I'll settle for the chicken.
As far as traditional toppings go, well, I'm not that
crazy about pepperoni, I hate mushrooms and olives.
Oh, here in Pgh. we also have pierogi pizza at some stores.
It's usually mashed potatoes (unfortunately usually instant),
cheddar cheese and grilled onions. They give you sour cream
to add on your own. I have found a place that uses real
mashed potatoes so I often get one there, hold the onions
(I don't like large pieces of cooked onion - it's a texture
thing).
I never get extra cheese. I love cheese but I also like to
taste the other ingredients. Besides, cheese is very filling
and I could only eat a tiny slice if there were too much cheese.
I've had extra cheese pizze that someone else ordered and it's
like eating just plain cheese! You really can't taste anything
else.
So, my favorite toppings are:
Pineapple and Bacon
BBQ Pork
Sausage and Green Pepper
Pierogi
Feta, Spinach, and Roasted Red Peppers (white pizza)
