Oh! I've already been doing that. :-) This HD is 60 gigs, the desktop is
80 gigs. Most files are already backed up on it. I'll finish a full
backup before installing the upgrade.

The cool thing about desktop HD's is that they are very affordable! I
paid $99.99 for the Iomega 80 gig about a year or so ago. They are less
than that now and there are bigger ones available for good prices, and
they don't take up much space.

I did have to buy a USB hub for it, but that was no big deal either.

And more efficient than burning a buttload of CD's/DVD-R's!

I learned my lesson after experiencing a major HD crash once and losing
a LOT of stuff! Not much was burned/backed up at the time. I quit
procrastinating and bought the Iomega as soon as I could budget it after
that.

I also need to get an external drive for my laptop. I've been doing a
lot of video lately and I'm down to 12GB free on the drive. I figure
I'll pick up a 350GB hard drive, take 120GB to do two rolling images of
my machine on, and the remainder to store videos.

Yeah. Just dump the main drive onto a backup. I have a few large files
I've put into permanent backup and erased from this HD.

80 gigs is small, but it's all I needed at the time. ;-)

The other issue I'm looking at is I need something that'll let multiple
computers access it so I'm more than likely going to have to buy a NAS
or Network Attached Storage device.

Actually I'll just buy a basic PC and turn it into a NAS. Cheaper that
way with most basic PC's running < $300 now.

Hm... This may be a stupid question, but can't you simply hook multiple
computers into a single backup HD thru a USB hub?

Yes but it requires the single PC to be on all the time, sucking power.
I'm a frugal sort, don't like paying for something I don't have to pay
for. So a little Buffalo NAS plugged in and serving itself out would be
perfect.
