I've never quite seen the type of special that you mentioned, but I've
come across ones where the larger size costs more per unit size than the
smaller size quite often. It pays to check rather than making assumptions.

Agreed. As far as buying something where the special prices make
no sense, I'd only buy if it was something I needed really badly right
then. Other than that I don't bother even wondering how it would
ring up.

As another poster mentioned regarding the 10 for something type sales, it
can be confusing. At my supermarket, normally you get the good price no
matter how many items you buy. I'm surprised how many people think you
really have to buy the 10 items. They catch a lot of people with that.

When the store where I shopped started with those sales, I thought
maybe you had to buy 10. They aren't very clear, but I guess if they
don't say how much if you buy fewer, you can assume it's still $1 each.
I mean, aren't there laws covering labeling? I'd think the label would
have to mention the single item price if it was different.

But once in a while you DO have to buy the exact number. I had a case of
that last week, where to use the special coupon, you had to buy exactly
four boxes of cereal.

I see that also with soda. At those times the sign will say Must buy
4/whatever
to get that price.

I think a lot of the 10 for something types of sales are a subliminal
suggestion to buy more even when there is no cost advantage. Even though I
know 4 for $1 means the same as 25 cents each, I might be swayed to pick
up 4.

On occasion I've seen items at 10 for $10 where I often find that item
at less than $1 each. It's not always a bargain, but that's why you have
to pay attention.
