I'm glad you said different, as opposed to inferior. What are objective
standards? Infant mortality rates? Life expectancy? Education
level? Or perhaps more materialistic US standards, such as the
size of one's house, yard, and number and price of vehicles owned?

It's difficult to make comparisons and many of the statistics people who
try to make those comparisons cite are misleading. The US is pretty
large and has a rather diverse population, statistics like infant
mortality (or violent crime) end up distorted when they are applied to
the US population as a whole since those issues have really bad stats in
certain areas while most of the country has much better stats. One or
two really bad scores in a bunch of very good ones can really distort
the appearances at a superficial glance. Those more materialistic
measures such as housing ownership and yard space for your kids to play
can't be discounted either.

general are in a much more urban environment which means beyond the
standard of living issue, they simply don't have the option to do the
kind of driving travel we do in the US. That urbanization also means
they are able to have more viable public transportation systems that
simply aren't practical for most of the US.

I agree, this is a huge difference, especially in the Western US.
Cities out west grew and developed as car cultures. Many places are
such that a car is nearly a requirement, if one chooses to live
the standard commericalized US lifestyle.

Don't forget the agricultural areas of the US that by their very nature
are rural and where public transport could never be very viable. Of
course if you put all those farmers and ranchers out of work and just
have big factory farms where they can buss in migrant slave labor then
those farmers won't need their pickups anymore...

ObFood: Dinner tonight? Spicy chicken stir-fry, copied
from a favorite local place. Chicken thighs, onions, and
serranos, stirfried then coated in a sweetish sauce,
sprinkled generously with dried Thai chile flakes for
more heat.

Did basic tuna melts. Quick and tasty (plenty of horseradish). Didn't
have ambition to cook anything big, happens now and then since it's just
me here.
