Used to summer at an organic farm in New Hope, PA as a newborn through 8-
yo.

Had to get up and do farm chores at 4am and bring the morning's harvest to
the kitchen for breakfast. I'd feed chickens and pigs and milk the cows.

Rang the wake-up bell at 6am, and had breakfast by 7am (IIRC). Nothing to
this day beats fresh hours-old milk.

We'd go into the fields and pick pea pods and corn in the afternoon and sit
outside of the kitchen and shuck and husk peas and corn for dinner.

When I was old enough, we'd sit on the fence and shoot crows over the corn
field. My absolute favorite chore, next to laying in the cornfields and
eating raw sugar corn till bursting or hanging in the apple trees, eating
apples and throwing cores at the cows. Simple stuff like that.

Then there were the dinner "declared" corn eating contests!

Got farm livin' in ya??? Do declare!

My Ma comes from a long line of farmers. Her parents were in Iowa before she was born, in South Dakota when she was little, and then my Grandpa built the house in Wisconsin which is where she was raised for the most part, and their house until they passed away. They had a couple hundred acres. Chickens, pigs, a couple cows and a mean-ass bull. Now, believe me when I say that was the single most obstinate, orn'ry and mean creature that ever lived on this earth. The second he heard that screen door squeal, he was snorting, scuffing his feet, lowering his head. I was scared spitless of that animal.

We spent alot of time on their farm, as well as my aunt & uncles: Margaret & Vern, Floyd & Kathy, Tommy & Judy...and more. Tommy & Judy had a place just down the road from Grandpa & Grandma, so we walked there quite often when we were up to visit. My sister and I loved to ride the tractors, while my brother's were mostly off in the woods. They had a pig that I loved when I was about 6, til the day we went up there and it was being served for dinner. I was devastated.

I pretty much hid when they were doing any butchering. I didn't care for that aspect. But I will tell you this: I haven't had pork, or beef, or chicken (especially chicken) that tastes nearly as good as it did then.

We climbed the trees, played hide and seek in the woods, milked cows (Margaret & Vern had a dairy farm...talk about hard work!), rustled up the cows when they escaped, planted, tended and picked all kinds of vegetables and fruits, put up preserves and jams and jellies and all kinds of stuff. My cousins hunted (well, still do), but I wanted no part of that.

Mostly what I remember the most was cooking with Grandma and Mom & whatever aunts were there at the time. To this day, I still crave the foods we made for Sunday dinners up on the farm.
