I have just been on a trek around our local supermarkets, in search of
kidney for a steak & kidney pie. I went to Somerfield, Tesco and
Morrisons (which is a down market shadow of the former Safeway) and
none of them had any. The chap at the butchery section in one of them
said, helpfully, if it is not over there (pointing to the meat shelves)
then we dont have any. I think they thought I might be an alien asking
for such unknown items.
Grocery stores used to have real butchers and bought sides of beef, cut
them up and sold them. Mot of the meat now comes in boxes, pre-cut and
packaged. If they sell a lot of steaks in their area they buy lots of
steaks, but if it is a hamburger neighbourhood they buy cheaper cuts to
grind or get the meat already ground. Organ meats aren't big sellers so
they don't order it. Talk to the manager of the meat department and see if
he can order it for you.
The local independent butchers have been forced out of business due to
supermarket competition so I cant go there any more.
Don't you wish that you had been more loyal to the local guys.
