Because she's family. No other reason.


There are people with whom that works as a strategy. There are others
who are toxic, and any time in their presence is an invitation for
pain.


Here's the root of our disagreement. Being kind a few times a year isn't a strategy for changing them. They're not going to change. It is a strategy for changing oneself into someone who isn't pained by a toxic presence. You turn into the sort of person who shrugs her shoulders in the face of manipulation and isn't bothered by it.
