What I hate is the bagger who arrives too late at the
checkstand to bag my groceries (because the checker
already did it) but then attempts to justify his miserable
existence by folding over the top of the bag. I don't want
the top of the bag folded over, and I'd prefer my
groceries are fondled by as few people as possible (a
view that will become much more widespread if bird flu
really takes off).
There's no social convention that suggests this guy should
be tipped. It just bothers me that he feels it necessary
to pretend to the notion he's actually working or providing
some sort of added-value.
It has never occurred to me to tip the bagger at the supermarket.
At many of the supermarkets around here, baggers aren't supposed to accept
tips after delivering your groceries to your vehicle. (Even while six months
pregnant with twins and with a 3 1/2-year-old in tow, though, I still always
take my groceries to my car myself. Just prefer to do it that way.)
I've
never had a bagger fold over the top of the bag.
I almost always choose plastic (have a lot of ways to reuse those), so no
folding over for me, either.
I have tipped movers.
Me, too. Decent movers definitely deserve to be tipped.
