The geniuses at the US FDA just made another of their insightful pronouncements.

They've decided that restaurants need be harangued into making portion sizes smaller. They seem think this will somehow help people eat less.

I can't believe my tax money pays for this nonsense.

FDA: Restaurants on front lines in obesity fight

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Those heaping portions at restaurants -- and doggie bags for the leftovers -- may be a thing of the
past, if health officials get their way.

This is ridiculous. How do they fix a buffet? That's all we
have around here and it's disgusting. Hungry Howie's, ABC
Pizza, Golden Corral, Golden Panda, Lupton's,
Morrison's...........all nasty buffets.

There is nothing disgusting about a buffet (presuming it's a
quality one). The small minority of 800# lummoxes who eat at such
places can be disgusting, but most people I see are not 800# and
are eating reasonable portions. Personally I never over eat at
buffets, my standard is two regular food passes (not heaped 2'
high) and one dessert pass. On occasions when I have missed lunch
I might do three regular passes.

The FDA report is right on the money. Restaurant portions are too
big and contribute to the problem of portion distortion- i.e.,
people get used to that much food and start to think it's normal.

Unfortunately it's a difficult problem. People are used to cheap
food and correlate portion sizes with value. Restaurants have to
make enough to cover their costs. It's ridiculous enough to pay
$10 for a plate of pasta as an entree; paying that amount for a
reasonable (i.e., smaller) single serving would be shocking.
There is one local restaurant that serves half portions of pasta;
the price is perhaps a bit over half the full price. Bravo to
them!

It's not so bad when one is in the position to take part of the
meal home but sometimes that is not feasible. It is difficult to
eat half of the entree and sit there looking at the rest until the
waiter comes by to remove and package it.

Sue(tm) Lead me not into temptation... I can find it myself!

Sue, Marcel and I went to the Heidelberg Restaurant for lunch.

Marcel had Wienerschnitzel with home fried potatoes and red cabbage and a small Dinkelacker beer, I had Bauernwurst with home fries and sauerkraut and a glass of Merlot. I skipped dessert, Marcel had Apfelstrudel mit Schlag and a cup of coffee. The bill with tip came to $55.00, the expected amount. While the portions were not huge, we are not big eaters and there was enough left over for a future meal. We were well satisfied with the food and the prices.

Would we have been just as happy if we had not gotten an extra meal out of our lunch? :o)
