For me: No meat for over 1 day -> lots of shaking, dizziness and cramps.

You shouldn't generalise froma single instance of anything, so this is
meaningless.

I didn't. My recipe for good health was open to personal preference and
variability, unlike vegetarianism which is totalitarian.

No one is forced to become a vegetarian, so that's just silly.

Face it, you only have to go down the local supermarket to see that
most meat meals are just chicken. Coronation chicken, Chicken Byriani,
chicken in white wine sauce, Cajun chicken, chicken nuggets and Chicken
Satay. You can cover it with a million different sauces and swamp it
with spices, but it's still just dull white meat. All the things which
add interest are vegetable, so why not cut out the middle man?

You claimed that selenium uptake from meat was higher because of the
presense of an enzyme. This document mentions no such enzyme and does
not say that uptake from vegetables is less efficient, only that red
meat is a good source.

I did not mention an enzyme. I believe I mentioned a catalyst, which in
this case I believed (but did not mention) was iron, which is also most
bio-available from meat. Regardless of whether iron IS a catalyst,
selenium is more bioavailable from red meat in particular.

Fine, but then again iron and selenium are bioavailable from plants, so
there is no need to inflict a painful death on thousands upon thousand
of animals and you don't get the harmful levels of saturated fats, high
density lipoproteins and free radicals.

You also don't get the breakdown products of the fight ot flight
hormones released by the animal when it realised it was going to be
killed. You lack the growth hormones it was fed on, or the
antibacterials, or the prions from the dead sheep it was fed, or the
risk of intestinal parasites like tapeworms.

You don't get risks of general diseases developing like bird flu, which
originated in ducks, but spread into poultry where it was able to
infect people. If it does mutate into a human form, it will be through
meat production. Read Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs and Steel to
understand how livestock have provided the medium through which some
truely devastating diseases have spread into the human population,
killing literally millions upon miilions.

Also, your claim was that meat eaters gain protection from selenium in
meat; so why is the rate of cancer lower in vegetarians?

Because people who care about what they eat and their health tend to be
healthier, regardless of whether they are vegetarians or not.
Vegetarians tend to be that because they care about what they eat and
their health. The fact that some of them are thin (only one vegetarian I
know is thin, but he is also a black belt ninja) may be that they are
undernourished ;D
Look up the link between selenium and cancer.

1. Most vegetarians don't greatly care about what they eat. They adopt
the practice for ethical reasons. The health benefits are a bonus.

2. The fact that vegetarians suffer less cancer and heart disease show
they are not malnourished. There is no evidence to suggest that
vegetarians are under nourished.

3. Most of the health problems which afflict the Western world like
heart disease, obesity, food related cancers, gout, type two diabeies
and others are due to over eating.

4. A ninja? You've been watching too many movies. Ninja were spies and
assasins. Now they're the poster boys for adolescents with power
fantasies and acne.

5. I don't need to look up the link between selenium and cancer, you
provided it. However, it is moot, because veggies can get all the
selenium they need from plants and they get fewer cancers than
meat-eaters anyway. It isn't broken for veggies, so they don't need to
fix it.

6. Look you dull old troll, why don't you realise that you are wasting
time you could be using to do something useful? You could be
questioning recieved doctrine and gaining the benefits of a rational
approach to life. Any entertainment you might get from this is no
better than masturbation and you migt be misleading good people.
