Could you, would you try the beets?
As _soon_ as I saw that picture this morning, I _knew_ you'd post it. I still like 'em. :-)
I love beets - and pickled are one of my favorites.
The salad bar at the grocery store near my office has this fabulous pickled beet salad that I adore but the price is just a teensy bit high.
Now a days i am appalled that i have ever eaten food i did not personally prepare.
I have been watching a Korean drama about life in the Royal Kitchens in the 1500's c.e.
And it connects with something i have always felt about food but until the last 3 - 4 years have never really felt the full impact of.
I instinctually distrust food i did not provide for myself. And thus never really enjoy it, now there was a time i could pig out on batter fried shrimp and a giant burger with a side of fries & copious amounts of beer and think i was in heaven. I was a lot more insecure in those days, 20 years or more ago. But that was just me, how do you enjoy your food if your the King and just don't have the time or knowledge to acquire or prepare ones own food? You have to trust people. If your rich and powerful you can offer them incentives for their feudal fidelity.
But with food, i have never enjoyed my food more, and that in so many ways besides just the consuming of it, since i have been forced to pay more particular attention to it.
I am way more aware, forced by my idleness of the last 4 years, to be more minutely aware of a lot of things i never paid much attention to in the past. Most of which is because i rarely buy any processed, commercial or packaged food any more. It is actually more difficult for me to get commercial ingredients than it is an astonishing variety of fresh, and im starting to experiment with Chinese dried black mushrooms, at least i have identified the supplier i am going to purchase from. $3.00 US per lb. is the best i can find so far. And thats for shitakes.
Having so little energy or strength these days i have to be a lot more careful with how i use what strength & energy as i have.
I am exceptionally fortunate that i live near a 24/7 open air Asian shopping area that i ignored through about 7 years of good health, i would walk over occasionally as 'something to do' but never relied on its produce.
Now i kick myself for all the years i wasted not patronizing it.
