Yeah, I took the little test. Didn't get past page 4 before being
told I'm
not eligible. Why? Because I *do* have some savings. Never mind
that they
are being rapidly depleted because I don't qualify for any sort of
assistance. Thankfully I have a very supportive family and
boyfriend.
I don't understand. How can anyone pay rent, pay gas and power
bills, buy food, buy clothes, run a car, pay for public transport, -
do anything - if they don't have money. How come they're not all
homeless and starving. I'm from Australia by the way, everyone gets
an unemployment benefit if they're not working and don't have any
money.

My situation is that I saved money (when I could) for 26 years. Doesn't
matter to the government that in my middle age that I'm depleting those
savings to pay my bills when I am (frankly) embarrassed to ask said family
and boyfriend for help. And I don't qualify for assistance simply because I
*did* work and save money.
In the U.S. (I can't speak to the laws in every state) unemployment
"insurance" benefits are limited to 6 months. As I stated in another post,
it doesn't matter if you've worked and paid into the system for this
"insurance" for 25 or 35 years; you get 6 months of benefits (usually 70% of
what would have amounted to your weekly pay). Also, because I didn't have
children, I'm not eligible for medical assistance.
As it is, when I lost my job in 2004 I sought out medical insurance. Since
my father was a career military man, as a former military dependent I was
able to get a pretty good deal through USAA. No, I can't use the insurance
for routine doctor visits or dental care or even prescriptions. But if I
should find myself in an accident or requiring emergency medical or surgical
care, after a $500 deductible the bills will at least be covered at 80%. My
medical insurance premium is the first bill I pay each month after my rent.
I've been caught without medical insurance in an emergency before and am not
willing to go that route again. And before you ask, no I don't qualify for
that sort of thing in Tennessee, either, since I don't have children. The
medical system is bent, if not totally broken, against singles and people
without kids.
