Re: Slightly OT: tipping the freshdirect delivery guy

Applecandy, I still believe that you are tipping Way Too Much. If you
tip 10% for this delivery, how much do you tip the guy who brings up
your $4,000.00 couch? Since you already pay for delivery, two or
three dollars is enough. I am certain that whoever brings you the
cartons, will not work all that hard. These guy deliver one order
after another, if every person gives him that kind of money, he will
make several hundred dollars every day in tips. The company pays
decent wages, from what I have heard.

But how do you ascertain that your suggestion of $2, since there is an
included delivery charge, is not too little?

I'm just curious not casting aspersions. My original thought was that
$2 was too little, from your neighborhood which was the upper east
side? But I don't know the norm there since I don't live there. Maybe
if I tipped less, I could :)

So I'm curious as to the method. Do all the people you know tip $2?
What do you do for cab rides? A straight 10%? So a $9 ride would be
$0.90?

I suspect that the answer is in the middle for the original question.
Have you ever had a job where tips was part of your expected take home
pay? Just asking. One fellow I know tipped very, very little and he
used to work for tips which I found surprising. Most people I know
would tip far more than he did - in the rich neighborhood where we
dined. He came from a low income Irish background and said that
over-tipping is a sign of disrespect. I did not quite agree with that
either. I made the social faux pas of pointing out that he tipped too
little which was rude of me. But I felt embarrassed for the server. So
I added to the tip.
