Wind and shopping carts don't mix. I watched a cart roll down the
parking lot at Schnucks once. It was windy as hell and slammed
right into the side of a car at the end of the lot. It hit so hard
you could hear the loud thud. I'm guessing the damage was more than
a ding.

SCHNUCKS!!! Holy crap! Just today I was telling someone about this middle of the night road trip, Minneapolis to Savannah I took 2 years ago and in the middle of nowhere Illinois we stopped at a grocery store and it was like a stoners dream, there were aisles dedicated to chips, snacks, treats, more chips, munchies and finally ice cream. It was stunning. There was also a guy who kept asking us if we'd been to such and such show earlier in the evening and Bad Heather kept wondering if she should stuff the cute guy in the back of the car, but Prudent Midwestern Heather rightfully pointed out that even the kind of dopey, sweet guys could be secret serial killers.

ANYWAY, I was trying to remember the name of this store because it
was so weird. And here you are telling me. And it's like the moon
farted rainbows all over the planet.

Okay, I've got a phonecall to make.

ROFLMAO, Too funny of a story. I shop at a lot of stores. We have
Schnucks, TJs, Dierbergs, Straubs, ShopnSave and Aldis within a
couple of miles of the house. We also have a Penzeys in Maplewood
which is not that close but well worth the drive. So where do you
shop now?

Michael

In minneapolis we have Rainbow and Cub as our cheaper groceries. I go to them on occasion, but the 2 near me are dirty and I can't get through the parking lot without somebody asking me for something. I shop at Lunds, it's pricier but the produce and cheese selections are infinitely better and I can get wild caught salmon etc.

If not at Lunds, then I hit the North Country Co-op or Whole Foods.

We've go Whole Foods here and Global Markets. Various Farmer's Market type places too. For my upscale shopping I am loyal to Straubs and on the lower end I like Sam's Club the best. I guess my favorite Middle of the road type place is ShopnSave.

Michael

Whole Foods is nice, but I can't afford to shop there now that I don't work there anymore :) I live two blocks from one and I buy my spices there, but that is it- I did the math and though the bulk spices are a little more expensive than the dollar store packages, they are much much fresher; the oregano actually smells and tastes like oregano, not just mildly "italian".
I get most of my groceries at Aldi these days; supplementing with sale items (usually just milk, meat, and some produce) from the stores closer to me.
I like Meijer a lot. Decent prices, reasonable quality, relatively helpful staff.
If I had more money and a freezer, I would join one of those CSA programs and buy local produce and meats. ($4.00/# for a side of beef aint a bad price at all!)
