I thought Snout is John Hasler's horse and I believe he's alive and
well.
Snout, aka The Old Man, aka Toncho was alive and well as of an hour ago
when I put him back out in the indoor arena to gnaw on (and spit out)
hay with his buddy Champ after (mostly) finishing his dinner. He's as
well as can be expected at 35.
Just to make sure I'd have something to do this evening, he crapped in
his feed tub.

Count your blessings. I used to have an old mare who'd crap in the water
tub, no matter how inconvieniently you placed it.
In ten degree weather, horse crap will freeze solid in about twenty minutes.
(This was in the day before good bucket heaters). I had a heater you could
throw in and thaw so you could dump tubs, but it wasn't safe to leave in.
Even when I got a fairly reliable tank heater, you still had poop water all
over when you had to dump a tub that should have been able to go a couple of
days between cleanings. Lots of water (aka ice) everywhere. So instead of
hauling boiling water to keep it thawed 18 hours out of 24, I had to thaw,
dump, clean, refill...Grrr...
I rotated tubs, so none got too full to thaw by adding hot water...except,
of course, they were too full of poop to just add hot water...and the heater
made *hot, steaming* poop soup.
