Chicks, chicks, everywhere.  Seven in the basement, eight under the

So, yesterday the egg in the bator peeped, so I stuck it back under
the hen to hatch.  I've done this with another late hatcher with no
issues, and I hoped the newbie would do just as well as its siblings,
and be raised by the hen rather than with the much-older basement
gang.

But, this morning I went out to find an empty nest, save a wet, dead
chick.  Poor thing must have hatched right about the time Dory took
the others off to forage, and froze.  He was stone cold and still.

So, I felt pretty bad about it.  I held the little guy and
apologized.  And then, being me, just had to try to revive him.  I had
hot water with me for the horses' alfalfa pellets - poured some in the
water dish - too hot - mixed in shavings until it was a good
temperature, and covered the chick in wet, hot shavings.  And I sat
and rubbed him, still apologizing for getting him dead the moment he
hatched.

And his beak moved.

Aaaaaiiiieeeee!!!!  I ran to the house, got a dish of warm water, and
shoved him in it, holding his little head above the water line.  And
slowly, over the next 20 minutes, he moved more and more.  First he
curled back into an egg shape.  But as he warmed up, he gradually
relaxed.  And about an hour later, he peeped.

At this point I had the incubator warming up, and I woke up the poor
hubby to take over so I could feed the horses.  The little thing was
peeping pretty well, eyes still closed, but hey - he was dead an hour
ago.  Mostly dead.

Long story short, he's dry and fluffy now, and looking like a normal
newly-hatched Mille Fleur.  His name is Wesley.  And I am hoping he's
a she. :)

Oh that was heart warming to read and you were so clever to use the
hot water with the shavings. You are my hero. I am sure your DH
appreciates your kind and loving heart.
