Interesting how things differ.

I have two college aged children and am surrounded by friends and peers
with college aged children. I have not seen any appreciable "learning to
be adults" happening with the kids living on campus that transcends those
living at home.

My girls both lived at home for at least part of the time. One is still
here, and one got an apartment in her second year of school. Both were
working while going to school and supporting their own habits, including
horses, and seemed a heckuvalot more "mature" than many of those living on
campus.

I would say that the maturity factor has less to do with where you live,
and everything to do with your focus and the amount you are investing in
the experience, either financially or otherwise.

Both my kids lived out of state 1 to 2 hrs away while in college
Daughter had her horse and was and Equine/Business Major so she
not only had classes but had to take care of Roo. At first she was not
happy
but me being a mean mother said she couldn't come home, if she hated
it that much transfer to a college in state but still had to stay on campus.
She
stayed for 4 years and still lives in that state.

Son got a job at an amusement part as a security guard so he go a
apartment in his Junior year and was on his own. Now married
and lives in his hometown.

I think it did them well to move away and meet the world
