Re: Louise - Not Good

There's a great chance that transporting her would make matters worse -
transporting takes a physical effort and is, I should think,
contraindicated - so the chances of recovery are probably equal in both
cases, only at home is far less stressful. And there's the question of
how great a chance you have of her making a recovery and whether you
want to keep her at a different facility for that period.

There's the possibility of surgical stabilization. I assume it would
depend on the fracture. But it could greatly increase her chances.

And I can talk to Nevins - the Mass SPCA. They have an equine
ambulance service with a sling and stuff, that would increase her
chances of getting there no worse. Last I heard they weren't charging
for the service, but, of course, they're appreciative of donations.
Maybe by now they've set a fee structure.

Jim feels so badly about it, he keeps offering - no, make that
insisting - that I check out every avenue. He's offering to sell
stock, etc. I'll have to be the one to be sensible this time.

Her reaction sounds bizarre. I've never seen anything like it.

The closest I've come was when Red fractured his pelvis. And that was
just one limb. The things that went through my mind - tetanus?
rabies? No - she's vaccinated, and she's OK with light and sound.
WNV? Encephalitis? No - she's vaccinated, and cranial nerves seem
OK. Fractured pelvis? Fractured Humerus? How can she have hurt so
many things so catastrophically at once? I immediately thought of the
fall, and the possibility of a hairline being tweaked. But where?

When the vet arrived, she'd palpate, say, "This is really painful
here." Then she'd palpate the same area and get very little pain
response. The pain was so bad everywhere, the ataxia was less obvious
- it just looked like she was trying not to stand on any leg. It was
horrible. Really, really horrible. I'd rather put her down now than
risk her going through that again.

I hope she'll pull through.

Thanks, I hope so.
