I was loaming the area of lawn that got dug up when we ran the water
line to the barn last fall. The horses were watching hopefully,
wanting to be taken out for some hand grazing. So I decided to toss
up a temporary electric fence so they could graze while I worked.
I got busy fencing the perimeter. It's easy work. I have plenty of
electric rope fencing and some step-in posts, and I can get power from
the garden/deer fence. No biggie.
Enter the hubby, who knows nothing about horses. He kept insisting I
only needed to fence across the open areas. The woods would be enough
of a natural boundary. Why would they run into the woods when they
have all this grass?
I had a moment where I realized that I'm always very rigid when it
comes to the horses, and maybe he had a point. I'm always insisting
on doing things my way. So I relented. We strung tape fence across
the open areas, and nothing along the woods.
The horses grazed for about 30 seconds, then did a few bucky runs
across the lawn, then ran into the woods. It wouldn't have been too
big a deal, except that they ran way, way the heck out there, and
there's an old box wire sheep fence near the big stone wall. And they
hit it at a canter.
Louise flipped over like a shot horse in an old western when they
still used trip wires. She was down for what seemed like forever.
But then she got gingerly to her feet and limped off. Jinks stayed on
his feet. Both were very bloody and very happy to be caught and led
back to the barn, thankfully fully weight-bearing.
Jinks has a couple shallow lacerations just above the knee, nicked a
vein, so it bled profusely, abrasions above the opposite knee, and two
moderately big knees. He's stiff and sore, but I don't think there's
anything serious, and nothing that looks like it needs sutures.
Louise has similar wounds with almost no swelling (she's not a TB),
and I cut off a skin flap that was hanging and threatening to get
snagged on something. I think her shoulder is a bit wrenched, and her
neck will likely be pretty sore.
They're both medicated and wrapped and confined to the level sand ring
for the night. They seem pretty cheerful, eating hay and hanging out
like they always do. I'm feeling pretty stupid. My poor husband
keeps apologizing, and I keep telling him - it's not in any way his
fault. He's not supposed to know better. I am. And I do. And I
shouldn't have let myself get talked into doing something I knew might
go south.
Aw well. At least they weren't seriously hurt. A couple weeks, and
they'll be fine.
Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Oh good gosh, horses all seem to be born suicidal. Glad they are ok.
Dana
Amen (on both counts: suicidal & ok).
