Which most would not do could they sell them for for fifty bucks.
Shelters get in abandoned purebred dogs everyday, often dogs that could be sold for well over $50. People abandon them because it's easier than selling them. To sell the dog requires placing an ad, answering calls, meeting people, agreeing to sell the dog and take the money. For many people, $50 isn't enough to go thru the heartache of all this (especially if they have kids). It's easier to dump the dog out in the country to fend for itself. They can tell the kids a lie about how the dog must have run off, and tell themselves a lie that the dog can fend for itself and have fun living out "in the wild".
I find it surprising how many people are unwilling to listen to someone who actually did research on abandoned horses and found a strong correlation between incidents of abandoned horses and the price of hay, and no correlation between abandoned horses and the closing of slaughter plants. I found her data well presented, and she made a compelling argument. Time will tell - when the price of hay falls, will incidents of abandoned horses decline?
