sharon, try this: Take a spoon out of your kitchen drawer. Now, hold
your left arm up at about shoulder height and let it drop from the
elbow down, so your hand hangs down loosely. Keep your fingers and
wrist relaxed, and put the spoon, with the back of the bowl toward
your palm, between your ring and middle fingers. Use just enough
curve to your fingers so the spoon is gently balanced, with the handle
pointing straight down. Your hand is the horse's mouth and the spoon
is the spoon of the spade bit and your hand is the horse's palate.
Now, take your right hand and ever so softly move the bottom of the
spoon handle (equates to the shank of the bit). Notice how the spoon
tucks into your hand? To take it further, get some tape and some
light string or yarn (normal reins) and some heavier, soft rope
(weighted reins, like romals). Try taping each to the bottom of the
spoon handle and see which one give you the best response when allowed
to drape gently. With the rope, you should barely have to move it,
even with a loop in the "rein" to move the bowl of the spoon into your
palm. The string would make it much harder. Now....use the string
like reins would be used, bringing the string up past your left
elbow. From there it's simple leverage...not that much is
needed...but as the angle changes, so does the effect of the curb.

We haven't even factored in poll pressure or the curb chain yet...this
is just the balance between good reins and the spade's spoon above the
port.

And wind has nothing to do with it and no effect on the reins or the
horse's mouth. ;-)

I'm going to try this.

In the mean time I'm writing a grant proposal to study the stability of pill box hats of various masses on draft cross heads. Wish me luck getting the money for this important topic.
