To tell the truth I don't know HOW the state lab determines it. The
saliva tested for rabies and had coon DNA. So if they want to say the
colt had rabies present in his body, then I'd have to say it was
accurate because he DID have rabid saliva on him, and in all
likelihood he would have caught rabies from a bite because he didn't
have his adult shots.

Well, to me, that would be described as confirmed bite from a rabid animal in an unvaccinated domestic animal, and the authorities usually push for euthanasia in those cases.

A positive would be if they isolated the virus from the brain tissue of the colt.

I know they wouldn't give us his body back and
let us bury it in our pet cemetary, and because his blood and the
dog's saliva got on my husband and daughter, when they tried to save
the colt, the lab people said they had to get rabies shots right away.

This is one of those diseases where you don't want to "wait and see".

So I'm not sure how it's determined. If an animal is killed by a rabid
animal is the dead animal percieved as having the rabies virus on it?
The state health people were pretty weird when they came out, because
they had never dealt with a rabies attack on a horse farm and had NO
desire to handle the horses at all.

They probably wouldn't want to handle the horses if it were a case of galloping ringworm...
