jmc explained :
Suddenly, without warning, Emily Brooks exclaimed (2/22/2008 9:23 AM):I turn to the combined wisdom of my esteemed colleagues.
In the process of separating my real life from my work life, I bought a Sony Vaio with Vista as the OS. The default Mail and News Reader is an Outlook Express replacement called Windows Mail.
Mail works.
I can read News.
I cannot post News.
The netnews accounts are set up in identical fashion, old PC vs new. When Windows Mail attempts to upload the new post, I get this message:
Windows Mail could not post your message. Subject '<whatever the subject might be>', Account: '<account name>', Server: '<server name>', Protocol: NNTP, Server Response: '441 Posting Failed (Rejected by POST filter)', Port: 119, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 441, Error Number: 0x800CCCA9
I traded emails with the ISP tech support for several iterations. Their advice boiled down to delete and re-enter the account. Which I did but nothing changes.
I spent several hours with them on the phone today. Their advice boils down to 'call Microsoft'. We did shut down the software firewall but that doesn't change anything either.
Microsoft's web does not have this error number plus when I try to send their help desk an email, their site barfs and sends me to the manufacturer of my PC. Somehow I don't think Sony is my problem but I've sent their help desk an email.
Any clues, o horse-friend gurus? So long as my ISP offers it for free, I'm not inclined to go to one of the lovely news suppliers out there. I'm not buying a MAC :-) I might, grudgingly, get a different News/Mail handler but it seems like this one ought to work.
Emily - using old PC for this one task. (I am not a Windows OR a PC guru. In fact, my guru-hood for UNIX has probably worn off after all these years of doing other things.)
Is your news feed from your ISP, or a third party?
Are you sending emails OK? It's just usenet posts that are failing?
My first thought is that perhaps you're missing something when you're setting it up - Try going to the instructions on setting your news server up - I'd make sure especially that you're entering the correct port.
I know nothing about Windows Mail and have been avoiding Vista like the plague ... What you could do in the interim and as a troubleshooting step is download and install Mozilla Thunderbird and see if you can post from that. If you can, then it's definitely something in Windows Mail.
If you can't, post the errors that Tbird gives you and we'll see if there's more of a clue there.
If you get fed up with Vista you can always dump it and install XP on it, but do some research first because in true MS fashion this isn't as simple a process as it should be.
Hope there's something in here that helps.

I've heard some folks attempting to load XP instead of Vista, but apparently there are issues with drivers ... haven't had to attempt it myself.
