Dolly is still lame, lame, lame. Swelling has gone down. She might be
marginally better than she was on Wednesday when the vet came out, which
is slightly better than she was Sunday a week ago. But she is obviously
lame at a walk still. Standing square, not pointing, not lying down more
than typical. The poultice does not seem to have brought an abscess out
any place I can find, nor is she the kind of improved a popped abscess
generally results in.

I tossed her out in the pasture with the good footing on Sunday because
it was such a nice day; she was no better, no worse, but a lot happier
out so I left her out til this morning. Freezing drizzle, not nice, so I
went ahead and put her back in the paddock. It's still lumpy but the
horses have been smoothing it down with walking on it, and the weather
is above freezing this next few days so it should smooth out more. We
are not getting enough rain to make muck and have it get worse. It isn't
ideal but I want her to have the shed.

She felt well enough to leave a perfectly good hay pile and chase Spot
Check off his hay pile.

So. I dunno. She was not sensitive on hoof testers, so I don't think it
is a stone bruise. Being kept in won't heal an abscess, just keep her
from feeling painful picking her way around the lumpy ground or avoiding
being nipped by a herd mate. I emailed the vet and let her know my
current thinking: out unless she shows signs of increasing soreness
again. She does not have to be sound-sound, just pasture sound. If she
takes a little longer to sort herself out but is more relaxed and
happier out there, its fine by me. If she gets worse, well, then back in
she goes. My vet wanted to come back in another couple days if she was
looking no better . . . I'm not sure what we would do at that point.
Test again, see if the abscess is closer to a surface? She could not
find a sensitive spot last time. She was mumbling about x-rays, but
again, I am not sure how that would impact my treatment options.

I was planning to ride this morning but freezing drizzle does not
appeal. Instead I stayed in, worked on a novel, and played with kitties.
I went with the Shakespeare theme: the grey tabby, who is most lady like
and also keen to be a mouser, is Rosalind from As You Like It. Viola
(The 12th Night) is the largest, bravest, least playful, and calmest of
the three and is the tuxedo cat with the most white on her face. And
last and not at all least is the smallest, most agile, most playful, and
least cuddly one, Beatrice (Much Ado About Nothing) the wild heart.

They are a hoot. And now I have to pack my karate bag (going straight
from work--testing for my next belt in a month) and get my tushie to campus.

Eileen,
Can you market some of your abundance of energy? I'll pay
whatever the price! I'm trying very hard not to go to the local
shelter and "visit" a cute tortoise-shell kitty that they have named
'Sundae'.....she looks yummy.....not sure if DH will be receptive,
although that hasn't stopped me for the past 30 years. My Chip is
sending 'feel good wishes' to Dolly. He says that it's tough getting
old...I concur...
