Doesn't he already have a name?
It is an older horse traders' saying that it is bad luck to change a
horse's name.
You take your chances!!!! ;>)

I've had the name change thing go both ways.

My sister's first horse was registered Our Gal Gay and her former owners
were calling her Argyle. Well, from the moment she was loaded off the
trailer she was trouble so her name became Murphy's Law and boy did she ever
live up to it. She was free leased to a woman who changed her name to
Journey. The woman bred her to a stallion who passed on a bad ticker to 90%
of his foals that year (she apparently didn't know) and the foal was dead at
birth or soon after. The mare then went out one day, reared up over
backwards and broke her back. Me thinks our name won out in the end.

I didn't change Meeko's name but one of the barn rats did the day the
trainer picked her up at dealer's farm. Apparently she was being called Mary
or Maria and the girl liked the name Meeko (after some hamster she knew). It
became entrenched before we bought her *sigh* so no new name seemed to
stick. We chuckle about changing it back to Maria (as in the Sound of Music)
but Meeko was the racoon in Pocahantus and the red squirrel in Hiawatha so
we figure she's destined to be tagged for trouble no matter what :-)

Fire was "That middle Arab" before we saw the papers and found out he was
Fighting Fire. My sister and I called him Fire only because "Middle Arab"
was a bit much to say every time we referred to him and his family (just as
Whitney's Starfire became Star and little unregistered brother became
Squishy). The name was entrenched before we bought him (although I sometimes
call him Beavis or Beaver Boy...Meeko was Butthead)

My sister didn't really change Katy's name all that much
(Kathyspersonalhope) but that horse is cursed with no so great luck.

Melanie who just changed the name of the reject cat dumped in her lap
Princess Pony who can't believe I'm telling people she's trouble
Blonde Ambition who is fine with people knowing he's a rebel boy (as long as
he can still wear pretty tack)
