Who would think this - and why - religious reasons?
fact animals may have emotions - i cannot understand why you think there would be a need for interlectual dishonesty on this subject- to what end?- for what purpose? All animals HAVE emotions on some level - no one denies that surely - the debate is how closely , if at all, they mirror human emotions.
ClareB
Because, if animals have no emotions, scientists can justify using them for experiments that would be horribly cruel for a thinking, feeling emotional being. There are still plenty of scientists and people who say that only humans have emotions - all evidence to the contrary.
Based on my observations of horses at liberty and at work in a variety of disciplines, in various places in the world, I'm a firm believer that animals do posses the same emotional depth humans do, and that most species have a lot more going on "between their ears" (are smarter) than we give them credit for. But like humans, there's great variance between individuals both in emotional capacity and intelligence. Horses can love or hate what they do.
What they enjoy and do not enjoy will of course be more closely aligned with how they evolved, so what a human enjoys won't necessarily be what her horse enjoys.
