Argh, this debacle just won't end easily for me it seems.
Well, well. As anyone who even takes the odd look at online horse
listings (Sharon, feel free to jump in.) most sites are rife with
warnings about potential equine related scams. Apparently, a favorite
one is for international "buyers" to contact persons selling items
online and then ask some really non-specific questions in broken
English after which there are some counterfiet cashiers cheques or
wire transfers offered. I haven't got any offers of payment so far,
but I have the following, which was sent from a hotmail account:
***************
Message: Hello Mate, I came across your ads and am so much intrested
in buying it, so if it still available, i would wantyou to get back to
me with the asking price, condition and also get to me with at least
two pics. . Thanks alot and speak soon. Kind Regards.
***************
Perhaps I'm just overly suspicious, but the only ad I have online is
for a horse and this reply is in very odd English, asks none of the
usual questions that one would typically ask about a horse, or even
mentions a horse at all. As for "condition"..well, that description
seems more apt for a piece of furniture, not an animal. Also, the send
time for the message was just after 4am which smacks of overseas to me
as I assume most regular people do not horse shop at 4 in the morning
on a weekday. Just in case it was legit, I did sent a synopsis of Jo's
recent activities/maintenance and so on and a .zip of photos. Let's
see what the response is.
**Unfortunately, the mail was forwarded from the sale site and so I
was not able to obtain headers for the message. I will, however, have
them for the reply as they will reply directly to me and not through
the ad site.
You may remember awhile back where I explained I was selling a couple of
bridles for a friend. For the past couple of months, I have had one bridle
on bitsandbridles site for sale. I have received about half a dozen emails
similiarly worded as the one you got. Funny salutations, odd use of
phrases, etc.
I feel certain these are scams and deleted they as quickly as I realized
them for what they were.
I just hope they can't get to me thru my email address somehow. Its scarey.
Like peeping toms and stalkers or something.
