Larger batteries mean a stronger charge for a longer time over a
greater distance. Indeed a solar unit is actually powered by it's
battery, and the solar cell recharges the battery. The one we used
had a small 6v battery; I've seen solar panels used to charge 12v car
batteries that then power the "shocker" unit.

I guess for very short term use with well broke horses the D-battery
unit might work. I would'nt trust it under any sort of rigorous
conditions, however.
