I had walked past the small gensets to get to the live traps - and
there was a 1KW set for $130, calling to me.
It flashed into view: an electric drill - or a water heater - or
whatever. In the wide open spaces Oh yes! Naah......
I've a friend in the RV business who says that the U.S. is being
innundated with cheap, Chinese-made generators. In his opinion few of
them will be good for anything besides boat anchors after a few hours
of operation. Design is marginal and manufacture demonstrates a
severe lack of quality control. Spare parts are frequently
unobtainable. This is real "buyer beware" stuff.
I've had an 1850 watt Coleman Powermate for years that has just
recieved in "honorable discharge." It was relatively light and would
power a drill, circular saw, lights, etc. It could be put in a small
"fencing wagon" behind the tractor and was very useful. The new ones
are about $400. That's three times the price of the cheap import, but
will likely last five or six times as long. And it's repairable! :-)
Now we have a pair of the Honda 2000 watt units that can be run in
parallel. They produce enough juice to run the A/C and other
appliances on the trailer or, singlely, go nicely in the fencing wagon
for work around the farm. Honda also makes 1000 watt unit, but I
think that's a bit small for much beyond a couple of light bulbs.
A good, portable generator is a very practical farm impliment!!!
The US market is getting plenty of Chinese gear - some with Chinese
names and some with US brand-names...
But I hear Honda has a quietized generator - and that would be
specially attractive.
