1) She is registering independence.

2) you chose a tight uncomfortable helmet.
Find a place with a selection of helmets.
Give her money. Three times as much money as
it should take. She gets to keep it all.
Ask her to chose one. A comfortable one.
A pretty one.
Lips zipped about too big helmets.
(Maybe too late now, but worth a try.)

Doesn't your insurance company make your students wear helmets. At our barn
a helmet is manditory as long as your on a horse wether its yours or a
school horse.
