Re: How do you get ready for a show?

First if I haven't pulled an all nighter for a really early departure I have to get up at 4 am to bathe and braid the horse, then feed, hay, and water those staying home, then load whichever in the trailer, then drive to the show, then do the paperwork, then clean off the horse, then get me cleaned up and ready, then get the horse off the trailer to warm up/settle down/quit leaping around. So I am generally too tired to be nervous by the time I get in the ring. I'm actually less up or on when in the saddle than when showing babies on the line. I'm generally concentrating on small goals like he will stand still when the judge walks around behind him or we will not buck or bolt into the canter.

I've never had problems with nerves when showing, probably because I spent high school and college on stage and then became a trial attorney before starting to show. I definitely feel the adrenaline but its a positive thing like being energized and ready to go. I feel the same way when I start a trial or speak to a full auditorium. It takes doing whatever it is that has the whole world watching you being critical of what you are doing often enough to become comfortable in the spot light. Once you have that it translates to any venue.

I have done 3 day seminars where I'm the only speaker, and have sung in public - never nervous. But I used to get sick to my stomach at swim/track meets as a kid, and really get nervous at horse shows. For some reason, physical performance seems to be my trigger (I don't mind dancing in public - but that's usually after a coupla drinks!).
