If she was referring to only a few times around, why did she mention
avoiding wear and tear? That suggests to me more than a look see
lunge
which obviously causes no wear and tear.

If I misread that I apologize. My head isn't on straight. >>

Sharon-

i mentioned wear and tear, because to be honest, i'm aware of your
absolutes in life, so i prefaced it with the "wear and tear"
warning...and i what i was suggesting...to learn to lunge your horse
so that you can evaluate his way of going is not going to create wear
and tear. on the contrary, it gives you a chance to see what is going
on, and in the best case scenario, a new way to communicate with your
horse.

And, i'll make a stand on this one...if you, or anyone! thinks that
lunging is going to create wear and tear, then obviously, you aren't
doing it correctly. I'm not talking about sending a horse out to
gallop wildly in little circles, i'm talking about big circles, i walk
the whole arena with a horse on the lunge...and none of my horses have
been ever sent out to "go play, go tear it up"on the end of a lunge
line.

lunging a horse gives you the opportunity to learn a whole host of
things about your horse, and about training. it's far less abusive
than endless 20m circles with someone on the back, cranking the head
in, ....which is what i see on an often enough basis to know it
exists. Lunging lets you see how your horse is moving in a controlled
environment, much like riding....if you aren't feeling what you
should, it offers you the opportunity to see what is going on, in a
more honest fashion than if you put up a rider who could influence
what is going on.... it's another way of gathering information, as
well as a way of teaching horses some things before trying them
astride. and...again, used judiciously, it does not create additional
wear and tear, on the contrary, it can PREVENT wear and tear.
