The double is for finesse - it shouldn't be an everyday schooling
for everyday schooling? I haven't heard her mention that.
In general, with a new horse at this level (1st to 3rd), one would
only be riding in the snaffle. Since Robin hadn't previously
mentioned "oh, by the way, we tried him in a double for the first time
today" and this was the first video we have seen - it looked like
maybe they were riding him in a double everyday.
bridle. I wouldn't be riding a new horse in a double for quite aYou are not a professional either. This was a "tune up" ride -
with an upper level horse like Calibra doing a tune up in a
double is appropriate.
With a horse you know well, I agree. With a horse you just bought, I
feel you should not be reaching for more hardware at this stage.
Robin said upthread that her instructor was using the double in this
riding session just to see if it fit him so she'd know what size to
order - that makes more sense to me. Otherwise it looked like a bit
of a rush to "fix" something with a horse that one doesn't really know
very well yet. And the tail wringing emphasized (to me) that the bit
choice and the way things were being asked of the horse might be a bit
much.

Just to clarify - Calibra is 4th level confirmed, nearly PSG (needs canter pirouette confirmed). Kelly will be showing him either 3rd or 4th in mid-July. I trust her to know how hard to press him, even though we just bought him, because she's a pro and has that "feel" that I don't. I wouldn't trust myself, however. I think your comments are right on for me. For Kelly, not so much. JMHO, with knowledge of her program, experience, and results. She put him in the double primarily to test him out, but I also trust that she knows how/when/how much to use it on any particular session. She wasn't asking him for much higher level stuff that day, just mainly testing the buttons, and tuning up the ones that were sticky. That's my way of looking at it.
