How strange. Is this a common practice nowadays? It's been a while
since I started riding.

I started riding in 1975. It was common practice to put beginners in a western saddle for the first few rides even if they wanted ride English.

The thinking was that the western saddle offered more support and "insurance" against falling off (pulling leather as a last resort was not ridiculed). Also, the western stirrup leathers keep the rider's feet from waving around.

I think there's a lot to be said for bareback lunge lessons, but that's not the way every instructor chooses to start.
