Val Checks Out

With five animals taking a few minutes of luxury grazing off the fresh
green in the spinney by the house, I walked Valentine out at the gate
and between the house and guest cottage - or I tried. The green
animals are anxious when passing that way initially, and Val being no
exception, I finally threaded her through the slender branches on the
far side of the cottage, down the drive, and back onto the lawn and
home base.
Though the animals will line up at the gate in turn, I now hook them
on a lead to enforce steadiness going out of the gate, rather than
letting them walk unaccompanied to the truck or wherever - which
formerly encouraged pushing. Returning them to the pasture, I saw
Friday the young gelding with a hind foot hooked in the lead.
I unhooked him without much distress. This only happens once
or twice with these horses as a learning experience.
Most unexpected taker of a walk was Missy, an experienced and
steady mare who was happy to take her turn at the gate for an
opportunity to stand and graze a little of the fresh green growth
with the young 'uns
