And remember to keep the corrections firm but not too strong. You can
actually get resentment from Al -- his doggie think tells him he has the
right and need to control as much as he can. He needs his pack leader to
tell him "Not so much."
To that end, you need to reward the "not so much" responses from Al.
Let him know that certain responses are OK, but other responses are
too much. Think of your responses as guidance rather than
"corrections". Guide each dog to the appropriate behaviors you want.

Good advice seconded (thirded, etc.) here. We introduced Nikko to Sam, the
7 year old pack leader at that point who was enjoying being top dog since
Brandy died. Sam weighs 17 lbs and Nikko is close to 70 now. He's a Lhasa
so extremely alpha -- the groomer actually told me, "Lhasas simply cannot be
dominated -- it's the nature of the breeding" but by virtue of her much
larger size Nikko doesn't intimidate easily. But Sam still keeps her in
line. We just show him what he can and can't get away with. They figured
it out, and are very close now in their way.
