Can you monitor his water intake? Many horses quit drinking or cut down when they are moved.

When a horse chews, the stuff in his mouth should be about the consistency of cooked oatmeal. You can open his mouth to check. Just don't do it wearing nice clothes.

If there's not enough saliva, he may not be able to swallow it.
