Cowboy Up

Hey All and Sundry.

The Little Barn That Could will be in operation as of tomorrow, September 1st. I am moving my daughters dipstick TB and my *new* horse, Cowboy, there in the wee hours of the morning. Another woman brings her two on Monday, and we have another three coming in over the next thirty days. Color me excited :)

Whilst perusing trailer ads and sneaking peeks at horse classifieds with my friend in mind, I discovered a horse for sale or lease that sounded just dandy. After a conversation or two with the owner, I traveled up to see and ride the horse. He is a peach, albeit out of condition and a bit overweight.

Stats: Reg QH gelding, 16hh, 13 yo, bright chestnut with a blaze, three stockings and a sock, started Western and did some low level gaming, has a fair amount of dressage under his belt, and spent some time with a teenager on the H/J circuit, who ditched him when she discovered boys. Current owner has had him for three years, where he is kept on a cozy little three stall property, but she has a seriously messed up back that makes barn activities and riding quite impossible.

Sound, sane, sturdy, rides out alone or in company, has done all kinds of trails and beaches and whatnot. Hadn't been ridden in six months and I hacked him around the property a bit -- calm on the ground, alert and cooperative under saddle. Responsive off the leg. Perhaps just a wee bit spoiled by Mom.

He is a big, sweet lump o' horse, with an inquisitive disposition, and we seem to get along just fine. I dismounted and remounted from the ground -- he stood like a rock. Can't wait to see what he looks like under that protective fatty coating...

Will post pics as soon as I get the boy to home. This will be the first horse that is just mine -- Cueball was shared by the three of us. I am looking forward to an equine relationship that is not micromanaged and critiqued by my two darling spawn <smirk>

His current owner and I hit it off and I am taking him on a free lease with first option to buy after a year. We are drawing up a simple contract outlining the basics. I plan to slowly bring him back into condition, and use him as a pleasure horse, sprinkled with cow chasing, and see if he can handle a wee bit of foxhunting. My best friend says I stepped in *** :)
