I'm sorry to hear about this sad situation.
Some elderly people are fiercely independent. We had a neighbor in his 90s. His wife died a few years ago. He wasn't in great health, but he could drive and kept up his daily routine.
With the approach of Hurricane Rita last year, his daughter cajoled him into going to their home in Houston. It was probably the only time he had left the island for a hurricane. His health declined precipitously and he died within a couple of months.
My point is, even when you think you're doing what's best, it doesn't always work out.
