Do you have anything made of metal thats in the ground, such as a
windmill? Use that. Look around for things that might work. A water
well casing is another option, but only if you have plastic piping, or
there may be a tickle of stray voltage in the water which animals can
feel. Your other option is to get 12 or even 20 feet of #6gauge bare
copper wire. Dig a trench as long as the wire and as deep as the
rock. Lay the wire in the trench, and cover it. Put this where there
is normally damp soil. Connect to that on either end, or in the
center. Of course it's probably more work to dig a trench than to
pound in a rod. If by chance you can find a farmer with an auger, see
if they can get thru the rock. If you have fence posts that were
augered in, the corner posts may have the deepest holes, put the rod
there, right next to the post (outside the fence), so horses dont trip
on the rod). If all else fails, cut two 6 foot rods in half and pound
in all four of the 3 foot pieces. at least 10 feet apart. Put a clamp
on each one, and run the #6 wire from post to post, and use #10 wire
to the fencer. I have run temporary fencers using nothing but one 30
inch steel bar and it worked. But during a drought I had a few
escapees. Leaving the hose next to that post ended that. But that
was only temporary.
Hope this helps.

Since my horses are always stretching our smooth wire fence, I am
going to put a strand of electric wire around my pasture. My question
is about the ground rod. The ground rods they sell at the store are
about 6 feet long. We have soil that is so rocky that you can't get a
sharp shooter to even scratch the surface. We have an inch of top
soil and the bermuda pastures are lush but below the top inch it is
largely rock mixed with dirt. How in the dickens can you drive a 6
ft. rod in dirt like this? Help!
