I had no idea the knobby spurs were so punishing. I was led to believe
they were mild (at least the smallest knob which is what I used BTW),
but I did use them by pressing into the horse's side.

I too, was tought that in riding lessons (them little nubs are nothing)
- thankfuly I was not experienced enough to be turned loose on a horse
with spurs on.

I don't think they are as bad as some of the rowel fans on the rec.eq
do, but then, I've also never injured my horse with a spur other than
once when I was having a slow motion spectacular fall and was in a
long sideways slide along the barrel and my spur dragged along Lite's
ribs. She got a long thin welt which was there a few days, no skin
broken. Since she has skin like wet paper, if my small spurs were out
of control or problematic, I'd *know*. She welts and tears easily from
insects, nasty plants, minor equine altercations, etc. I've also not
seen some of the Tales of Horror described by some of the non-dressagy
and non-jumper folks about horses getting welted up--and I've worked
many an in and out gate at shows. I can think of one or two horses
which had 'too much spur/leg' coat creases, from the same stable, and
that's about it.

I also rode many, many years before I added spurs to my kit, FWIW.
