Re electric fencing, I see that I can either use a 110 outlet or I can
get a solar panel powered transformer. Which is best?
Solar fencers are feeble, but might be adequate for your purpose.
If you have the transformer connected to a 110 outlet, is the fence
continuously using electricity? If so, the solar panel, although more
expensive, might be the overall cheapest way to go.
The cost of the miniscule amount of power used by even the most robust AC
powered fencer is going to be less then the interest on the money saved by
not buying a solar one.
I only have a 2 acre pasture so the wire will run only 1/4th mile. Can
you recommend the best brand/model for me to use.
Zareba.
Also, I know that I can use several wire sizes. What would be best?
Electrically it doesn't matter. A larger gage will be more
durable but more work to install.
BTW a fence charger is not a transformer. It is an electronic device
(older ones were mechanical) that produces a narrow, high voltage pulse
once per second. The nature of the pulse is such that it is painful but
not dangerous.
