Hi Susan,
Cindi, there are whole feeds (concentrate and roughage)out there that can be
soaked and made into a slurry that a horse can drink - I had to do that for
three weeks for an old horse with a mouth injury. We used Equine Senior,
mixed with lots of water. He never lost an ounce. Unless the vet mentioned
it, could it be that he/she didn't think of it? Just a suggestion.

We talked about that, since I have pellets and senior feed on hand
anyway, and the vet felt that for the few mouthfuls he'd get to
determine if he was still choked, it may as well be grass. And then
once he's no longer choked he'll be on grass full time (he went out
last night and is doing fine as far as the choke) which he assumed
would be enough. However he's not really spending a lot of time
grazing; I think this is his first time alone, and when I come out with
everybody else's pellets, he definitely wants some. So now that it's
been a couple of days I'm going to ask if I can make him a slurry a
couple of times per day to try to keep his weight up. As long as it's
wet enough I can't imagine it would hurt him.
I have a gelding who sometimes doesn't drink very much water, so I can
take a cup of Equine Senior and put it in with five gallons of water,
and that silly boy will drink the entire bucket trying to get to the
feed. :-) Other horses I've had/have seem to turn their noses up at
wet feed. I think Shrek will eat it; he's a good eater.
thanks,
cindi
