Cindi,
I don't know how anyone here can tell you, not knowing what they are
shooting. Hell, it could be firecrackers.
My advice is to wander over and tell them the shooting frightened you,
because of your animals, and ask them to educate you about their guns
or something.
That way you are letting them know you are concerned for the animals,
and children, without being confrontational.
You've seen since you asked how defensive some people can get about
their rights to shoot.
The fact is... accidents happen....
My neighbors were shooting when I lived in TN, in a development, my
dogs and I were outside and we beat it back into the house.
I've been barely missed twice by bullets, one was shooting at me
thinking I was a critter and the other was a little kid who picked up
a gun and fired it, with no adults present. As I said, accidents
happen.
Don't antagonize them....
Hunter

Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well-preserved body,
but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "...holy ***...what a ride!"
